PALERMO 0-1 Venezia
Serie B
Sunday 27th November 2022
The Rosanero made two changes from the 3-2 loss away to Cosenza, Bettella replacing Marconi at centre back and Sala replacing Devetak at left back.
Palermo had the first of the opportunities Sala with a cross into the danger area but Segre couldn't get a good contact on the ball. Venezia's Pohjanpalo had a chance from a deep cross but it found it's way straight into Pigliacelli's hands. Venezia kept trying their luck down Palermo's right and with Mateju preferring to play inside it seemed a better place than any for the Arancioneroverdi. In the 11th minute Broh was too casual at the back and got tackled and the shot goes wide, Broh raising his hands in apology but such mistakes could be easily punished. In the 15th minute Palermo received a free kick on the left Valente took it and it was easily collected by Venezia's goalkeeper Joronen. On the half hour Broh once again played Palermo into trouble playing a dangerous ball across the back line but thankfully nothing came of it. Di Mariano cut back and found a cross for Brunori who was challenged in the air and wins a corner, the best move so far. Nedelcearu found some space and brought the ball forward from the back to Segre who was fouled by Tessmann who picked up the games first yellow card. The 41st minute saw Palermo have two chances one after the other, the first from Di Mariano who's shot was blocked and Sala's shot was blocked and out for a corner. Just before half time it got a little nervy Pigliacelli saved a shot and Mateju blocked and the shot from distance went wide.
In the 49th minute Palermo believed they won a penalty out of nowhere, a pass back by Venezia into no man's land was quickly picked up by Brunori he tried to beat Joronen who came out just as quick and Brunori went down with the referee pointing at the spot. This decision of course went to VAR and after looking at the monitor the referee overturned the decision concluding that Joronen indeed got a touch on the ball. Pigliacelli once again being the difference making a save from a Venezia counter attack. Valente had a long range effort that went well over the bar. Mateju kept putting himself as a 3rd centre back which .eft space for Venezia to attack if it wasn't for Valente having to cover Venezia could have been more dangerous, but this of course made Palermo short on the right hand side. In the 65th minute a breakthrough came for Venezia Pohjanpalo scoring the goal, 1-0 Venezia. Two minutes later Palermo won a penalty after a better cross from Di Mariano into Broh and it was judged a Venezia hand was involved. Brunori stepped up to take the penalty and you'd be forgiven for believing that this would be the equaliser but he put his penalty to the right and Joronen saved, Brunori made it to the rebound but he kicked the ball into the ground and over the bar.
Full time 1-0 Venezia. It was a poor performance with no real energy and a lack of quality in midfield is evident. This would have to be Brunori's poorest performance in Rosanero by his high standards to have a penalty saved and the rebound completely mishit and having no real presence in the game. Performances will need to improve when we travel to Benevento. It was a tough game to watch and a tough game to write up and I'd hazard a guess a tough game to read about. One to forget.
