8 changes for the Sky Blues to the League Cup against Bristol City. Simon Moore retaking his place in goal, Hyam for Rose, Panzo for Doyle, Bidwell for Adaramola. Sheaf and Hamer in for both Eccles and Palmer who were on the bench, Jamie Allen pushed up behind a front two of Godden and Gyokeres who replace Walker and Tavares.
Coventry City started really well scoring in the 2nd minute, a Hamer corner flicked on at the near post by Godden which was met by McFadzean who got in front of his man to get a toe on it to bundle the ball in. 1-0 City.
The Sky Blues continued their good start with a good move started by Ben Sheaf who intercepted a pass, he came out strong to beat two passed to Godden on the right back to Sheaf who backheels into Dabo's path to Gyokeres onto Godden who scored but he was sadly ruled offside. The Sky Blues struggled to advance in congested midfield, Millwall were well organised but City would still try to find an opening. McFadzean with those minutes in him from Bristol City was strong and dependable he won the ball and found Gyokeres who played a round the corner pass to Allen, Gyokeres continued into the box where Allen found him with a deft chip which Gyokeres lost sight of but it fortunately hit him on the back able to retrieve it he shoots on the turn and it was over the bar. In the 29th minute Gyokeres picked up the ball played it through to Bidwell on the left who put in a delicious cross for Godden to slide in on to score, 2-0 Coventry, the lawnmower celebration didn't need to be fired up it was already going, Dabo grabbing Godden's ankles to reinvent the lawn mower celebration.
In the 32nd minute Millwall had their best opportunity from a corner, Wallace jumping above everyone to get a powerful header with no direction. Coventry kept coming at Millwall and their defence was making mistakes the home crowd at The Den were beginning to get on their backs once that happens it can get quite hostile, the Sky Blues really should have capitalised on this turn of events but they squandered it letting them back in. Minutes later Hamer makes a daft foul on half way, the free kick floated into the box, Moore comes too far out to claim a ball he was never going to get he was nowhere near it, Cooper gets his head to the ball and it's in the net, Millwall 1-2 Coventry City.
Hamer picked up his second yellow card of the season with a foul from a similar position to the free kick which resulted with the goal. Moore made a good save made himself big and cut the angle, the rebound was well blocked by Hyam. Half time Millwall 1-2 Coventry City.
Sheaf with some good passing between Godden finds him in space passed to Gyokeres who's shot was blocked. City and Gyokeres pressing to find an opening he beats his man gets to the touchline gets the shot off but the defender does well to get back and deflect the shot into the keepers hands. Sheaf having another good game made a run into the box but as soon as he got there he was indecisive and easily tackled, he needs to find more composure when in the box. Coventry would run the missed chance of making the most of The Dens hostility, a counter attack on the left, a shot from outside the box touched onto the post by Moore, Honeyman was quicker to the rebound to score the equaliser as Panzo failed to react, 2-2.
Coventry reacted putting Millwall under pressure yet again, McFadzean with an effort outside the box tipped over the bar by Bialkowski. The resulting corner saw McFadzean given a chance which he didn't take, the corner into the near post found Panzo who's header hit the bar, the ball found it's way to McFadzean who got it out of his feet he should have took the shot on but he opted to pass to Hyam who's shot was blocked. Once again we saw Jamie Allen's dancing feet in the box but the move came to nothing. The 68th minute saw Coventry a man down, Millwall looking to counter, Hamer chasing it down it was a collision more than anything, a foul yes but never worthy a second yellow. He made his way in disagreement and anger.
Millwall tried to make the man advantage count from a corner, a free header at the back post going over. Dabo played a beautiful crossfield ball into the box for Gyokeres who loses sight of the ball and is wrestled off it, his frustration is beginning to show. When he's frustrated he makes things happen and he almost did finding space and unleashing a shot on target that was saved. Despite being a man down had the better chances, Allen this time having a long range shot which stung Biakowski's hands. That man advantage and Citys determination to find a winner left them susceptible to the counter and that's exactly what happened in the 85th minute for Millwall's winner, Burey with a deep cross headed in the air by Bidwell which fell kindly for Adobe who passed to Saville who's shoots to the far post and scores, Panzo in no man's land, Millwall 3-2 Coventry City.
Mark Robins by this point still hadn't made any changes, the game was crying out for it after the red card, those changes came in the 89th minute, too little to late for me, Tavares on for Godden and Eccles on for Panzo. Even though Gyokeres' frustration was plain to see he never gave up in stoppage time showing his strength and tenacity but to no avail. Millwall 3-2 Coventry City. Coventry played well but really should have made the most of The Den getting on their players backs, the lack of change is frustrating but that's Robins we're aware of his reluctance and lateness to change. As the Millwall fans sung and rightly so 2-0 and you fucked it up.
